Connecting with God in a

Noisy, Fast-Paced World

Listening to the Lord is the first thing, the second thing, and the third thing necessary for successful intercession.

—Richard Foster

It was one of those overly packed days in which tasks seemed to multiply and there weren’t enough hours in the day to get them all done. I had taken care of my darling, energetic two-year-old grandson Luke all morning while his mom was out of town. Luke and I enjoy playing with little toy cowboys and Indians and reading books together. I’d fed him breakfast, done housework, and taken him and the dog for a walk. Then, after taking Luke out to lunch, we went to the grocery store, where we found a little toy rifle he was thrilled with. (By that time, I was reminded why God gave little children to much younger women than I!)

After dropping him at the babysitter’s house, I headed for the office and typed like crazy for three hours to meet a magazine deadline, answer e-mail, and polish a speech for a weekend conference before making a stop at the post office to mail some book orders and a package to Chris in Iraq. It’s exhausting even now, just revisiting that day!

Though I was tired, I drove over to the YMCA to walk on the treadmill because I knew it would be my last chance of the day to exercise. If I went home now, I’d crash and never make it back to the Y.

I hopped on the treadmill and started the belt. After a few minutes of walking, I realized the television sets hadn’t been changed to the right channels for the afternoon—again. Somewhat annoyed because the channels were supposed to have been changed a few hours earlier and they were too high for me to reach, I got off the treadmill and went to the desk to ask the attendant to make the change.

Unfortunately, I was in such a hurry and so focused on getting those channels changed that I hadn’t paid attention to something very important: the treadmill belt was still moving. I hadn’t taken the time to turn it off. So when I got back on the machine, it threw me right off, and I fell, crashing onto the hard metal edge of the treadmill, bruising my knee, and smacking my left arm and elbow. In moments, fellow exercisers had gotten off their treadmills and elliptical trainers (and, being a lot smarter than I was, they had turned off their machines as they did so), and were staring down at me, asking, “Are you all right?”

Of course I wasn’t all right. The exercise director hurried to my side with an ice pack and a towel to stop the bleeding.

By this time, you’re probably thinking I am really crazy or careless. But the incident underscores the fact that accidents happen when you’re rushed and not paying attention. (My defensive-driving instructor said those factors are among the leading causes of car wrecks.)

Despite more ice packs, Bactine, and Band-Aids, a few hours later my arm was swollen, bruised, and seeping blood.
